How to Become a Dentist in Ireland

Ireland is an attractive destination for overseas-qualified dentists due to its high clinical standards and growing demand for healthcare professionals. However, the pathway to practicing dentistry in Ireland is structured and competitive, requiring careful planning and early preparation.

This guide outlines the step-by-step process to help you understand how to become a dentist in Ireland, if you obtained your qualification outside the EU/EEA.

Step 1: Apply for the Irish Dental Council (IDC) Exam

To legally practice dentistry in Ireland, non-EU/EEA dentists must pass the Irish Dental Council (IDC) registration exam.

The exam is conducted once a year, usually in mid to late March, physically in Ireland. The next available intake is scheduled for March 2027.

The application window typically opens in January 2027 and remains open for only about one week. This is a strict deadline, and all required documents must be submitted within this short timeframe. Late or incomplete applications are not accepted under any circumstances.

Step 2: Prepare Your Documents in Advance

Because of the limited application window, it is essential to prepare all documentation well ahead of time.

You will need to submit the following:

* A fully completed application form

* A copy of your passport

* Two passport-sized photographs with your name and signature on the reverse

* A certified copy of your dental degree or diploma (with certified translation if not in English)

* Certified copies of your academic transcripts (with translation if required)

* Evidence of having been engaged in the lawful practice of dentistry for three consecutive years within the last five years, or proof of continuous practice since graduation

* An original Certificate of Good Standing from the dental regulatory authority where you last practiced

* Proof of English proficiency, either stated on your degree/transcript or provided through an official letter from your university

If you are currently residing in Ireland, you may also include proof of residency, such as a scan of your Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card.

To be eligible:

  1. You must have 3 years of experience in the last 5 years, or practicing since graduation.

  2. No English exam is required if you studied in English- you just need official proof from your university.

  3. You need to be able to get a good standing letter issuied from the registration body/authourty in the county you last practiced in.

Step 3: Understand the Selection Process

After submitting your application, the Irish Dental Council will review all eligible candidates.

Applicants are selected randomly. If you are selected, you will be contacted via email and asked to confirm your attendance.

From the time you receive your exam offer, you will typically have around 1.5 months to prepare and sit the exam. This limited timeframe highlights the importance of starting your preparation early.

Step 4: Start Preparing Before You Apply

One of the most common mistakes candidates make is waiting until they are selected to begin studying. Given the short preparation window, this approach can significantly reduce your chances of success.

It is strongly recommended to begin your preparation months in advance.

Step 5: Use Structured Resources to Save Time

Preparing for the IDC exam can be overwhelming due to the breadth of topics and the need to revise efficiently.

At HealthPath Ireland, we have developed structured study materials that summarize key concepts from reliable and authentic references. Our goal is to help candidates focus on high-yield content, reduce study time, and approach the exam with clarity and confidence.
